What we collect and why
We aim to collect as little personal data as possible. The only data processed when you visit this site is the following:
Hosting, server logs, and site analytics (WordPress.com / Automattic Inc.). This site is hosted on WordPress.com, which is operated by Automattic Inc. in the United States. Automattic processes the data needed to run the site and to give us aggregate readership figures. Specifically:
- Server access logs: every page request is automatically recorded with your IP address, the page requested, the date and time, your browser and device type, and the referring page. Automattic uses these for hosting, security, and abuse prevention.
- Jetpack Stats and Insights: the same data is used to produce aggregate visitor counts and the Insights dashboard, which we use to see which posts are read and where readers come from. We do not see your individual browsing history.
Automattic’s privacy policy applies to all of the above and is available at https://automattic.com/privacy/.
Jetpack Subscriptions (Automattic Inc.). If you subscribe to receive new posts by email, your email address (and, if you choose to provide it, your name) is collected and stored by Automattic on its WordPress.com infrastructure, which operates the subscription service on our behalf. We use it only to send you the posts you signed up for. You can unsubscribe at any time using the link at the bottom of any email, or by managing your subscriptions at https://subscribe.wordpress.com/.
Jetpack Likes (Automattic Inc.). “Liking” a post requires you to be signed in to a WordPress.com account or one of the linked social accounts Jetpack supports. When you like a post, your username and avatar are displayed next to the post, and the like is recorded by Automattic against your account. We do not control that account or the data Automattic stores against it.
Sharing buttons. This site shows sharing buttons for LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, Bluesky. The buttons themselves are static and do not load third-party scripts or set cookies until you click them. When you click a button, you are taken to the relevant platform, which will then process your data according to its own privacy policy.
Contact form (Jetpack Forms). If you use our contact form, we receive whatever you submit — typically your name, email address, and message — so we can reply. Submissions are stored on the WordPress.com admin interface and emailed to us. The Akismet anti-spam service (also provided by Automattic) checks form submissions for spam, which means the submission metadata is transmitted to Automattic for that purpose.
What we do not do
We do not run advertising cookies or marketing trackers. We do not sell, rent, or share your personal data with any third party other than Automattic Inc., which acts as our processor for all of the activities described above (hosting, Jetpack, Akismet). We do not profile visitors or build advertising audiences. We do not use the contact form or subscriber list to send marketing — subscribers receive only the blog posts they signed up for.
Cookies
This site does not set advertising cookies or third-party analytics cookies. WordPress and Jetpack may set strictly necessary cookies tied to specific actions: logging in, leaving a comment, liking a post, or managing your email subscription. These cookies exist only to make those features work, are not used for tracking, and are not shared with advertisers. Clicking a sharing button takes you to a third-party platform, which will set its own cookies under its own policy — that is outside our control.
International transfers
Automattic Inc. is based in the United States, so all of the data described above — server logs, Jetpack data, subscriber emails, and contact-form submissions — is transferred outside the UK and the EU. Automattic relies on the Standard Contractual Clauses (and the UK Addendum) as the legal mechanism for those transfers, as set out in its privacy policy.
Legal basis (UK/EU visitors)
Where the UK GDPR or EU GDPR applies, we rely on the following legal bases:
- Legitimate interest (Article 6(1)(f)) for operating and securing the site, server logs, Jetpack Stats and Insights, Akismet spam filtering, and replying to messages you send through the contact form.
- Consent (Article 6(1)(a)) for email subscriptions and for liking posts. You can withdraw consent at any time by unsubscribing or by stopping using the like feature.
You can object to processing based on legitimate interest at any time using the contact details above.
Retention
Server logs are retained by WordPress.com in line with Automattic’s published retention schedule. Jetpack Stats and Insights are retained indefinitely; the underlying raw data is handled per Automattic’s retention policy. Subscriber email addresses are retained until you unsubscribe. Contact-form submissions are retained for as long as we need them to handle your enquiry, then deleted.
Your rights
If the UK GDPR, EU GDPR, or a similar law applies to you, you have the right to access, correct, erase, restrict, or object to the processing of your personal data, and to lodge a complaint with your supervisory authority. In the UK, that is the Information Commissioner’s Office (https://ico.org.uk).
Changes
We may update this notice as the site changes. The “last updated” date at the top reflects the most recent revision.
